Ok. Catch up time.
I am utterly utterly crap at updating my PRJ. That’s fairly obviously obvious seeing as this project finishes next week and this is the second entry I have made since it began. This is something I’m really going to have to work on before we start the FMP.
But yeah. What’s been going on? After researching prison art I concluded that a lot of the stuff that inmates come up with is actually just everyday stuff. Pictures of landscapes, trees, people, animals etc etc… the irony here being that we have been discouraged from anything representative because it may remind inmates of what they are missing on the outside world. I’ve had quite a job getting my head around the brief itself, as I stated in my previous entry, but I’ve managed to get out some concrete ideas that aren’t completely abstract, which was one of my main goals.
I’ve tried to incorporate a number of elements into the pieces that I’m going to submit:
- Art Nouveau influences - contrasting the uniform/regimented straight lines and right angles of a prison.
- Female form - often used in art as a symbol of hope and liberation. Had to be careful to avoid sexual connotations though, for obvious reasons.
- Relaxing, cool colours - sky blues etc seemed like the best option here, rather than intense reds/oranges that have been proven to raise heart rates.
- Stars - symbolic and meaningful in many different ways. Have been used in politics, religion… generally have positive connotations so I decided they would be the ideal symbol to include in my work.
I have maybe 3 or 4 solid ideas to develop, the issues now being how to reproduce them on a large scale and what media will fit the criteria best.
